Recently, a dear friend called me in a panic. Someone had shown up at her door saying they had purchased her home and were there to get the keys. 😳 For the two weeks prior, people had been showing up to “look at her rental listing.” The problem? Her home wasn’t for rent—and it certainly wasn’t for sale!
Unfortunately, this kind of property fraud is becoming more common. Scammers have been known to list homes, condos, and even vacant land for rent or sale without the owner’s knowledge. It’s unsettling, but there’s a free and simple step you can take today to safeguard yourself.
🔍 How to Protect Yourself from Title and Listing Fraud
Most counties now offer a free property fraud alert service through the County Clerk & Recorder’s Office. This program notifies you anytime a document—such as a deed, lien, or title transfer—is recorded in your name.
Here’s how to do it:
Visit your county’s website.
Type “fraud alert” in the search bar.
Follow the prompts to enter your name and contact information.
You’ll receive an email alert if any new document is filed in your name.
It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s one of the best preventative tools available to protect your property from being fraudulently sold, transferred, or rented.
