Fifty Years of Women's Rights

It’s so inspiring to reflect on this progress! The journey to financial independence for women saw a major shift in 1974 with the passing of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA). Before this law, it was common for banks to deny single women credit without a male co-signer, and married women often needed their husband’s approval. The ECOA made it illegal to discriminate in lending based on gender, race, age, or marital status.

This act was part of the broader women’s rights movement of the 1960s and '70s, driven by advocates who fought for women’s economic freedom. As more women entered the workforce and pursued higher education, they needed and demanded equal access to financial resources, which culminated in this pivotal legislation. This change has empowered countless women to achieve greater autonomy and realize their dreams—like homeownership and entrepreneurship—on their terms.

Empowering women to understand that they have allies—Realtors like me—who are dedicated to finding programs and support to make homeownership accessible is inspiring. Owning a home brings so much more than property; it builds security, a foundation, and a legacy for future generations. Sharing that commitment will encourage women to take that bold step toward stability for themselves and their families.
